Understanding using Light in your picture

Understanding Light in Drawing

When you start a drawing, one of the most important steps is deciding where your light source is. This light can come from natural sources like the sun or artificial ones like a lamp. Why does this matter? Because light is the magic that brings flat drawings to life, giving them depth, shape, and a sense of reality.

Light affects how we see objects by creating different zones on their surfaces. These zones include highlights where the light hits strongest, lighter areas, midtones that show gradual shading, core shadows where the light is blocked most, reflected light that bounces back onto the object, and cast shadows that fall onto other surfaces. Each of these zones helps define the object’s volume and form, making it appear three-dimensional instead of flat.

By carefully observing and marking your light source and these zones in your drawing, you can create convincing and dynamic images. This technique transforms simple shapes into objects that look real and tangible, capturing how light travels and interacts with surfaces. In essence, mastering light is mastering the art of giving life to your drawings.
